Drilling, Completion and Stimulation Funding OpportunityMaster Announcement: Amendment 01 is hereby posted to include a 4th Areaof Interest entitled, Technologies and Strategies to Enhance Coalbed Methane (CBM) Production.Amendment 01 supplements AND CHANGES some sections of the FundingOpportunityMaster Announcement. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT ALL APPLICANTS READ THE FUNDINGOPPORTUNITY MASTER ANNOUNCEMENT AND AMENDMENT 01.NOTE: This descriptive area provides an overview of this FundingOpportunity.YOU MUST READ THE FUNDING OPPORTUNITY MASTER ANNOUNCEMENT AND AMENDMENT 01FORDETAILS ON ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, EVALUATION CRITERIA AND HOW TO PREPAREANAPPLICATION UNDER A SPECIFIC AREA OF INTEREST. Please scroll to the bottomofthis page under the heading Full Announcement and Other Files and clickonthe link to access the Funding Opportunity Master Announcement ANDAmendment 01.The Department of Energy (DOE) is competitively seeking cost-sharedapplications for research and development efforts to enhance and sustainthedomestic supply of natural gas. Technological advances will need to bemade inorder to produce the vast resources in the tight and/or deep HTHP resourcebasins of the United States. This Announcement will be administeredthroughthe Office of Natural Gas at the National Energy Technology Laboratory(NETL).There are four (4) separate Areas of Interest to which an application canbesubmitted under this Master Announcement (see below).DE-PS26-05NT42395-1 Area of Interest 1: DEEP TREKApplications would include research that fits under the DOE?s Deep TrekProgram, which focuses on developing very deep (>20,000 feet) drilling, completion and stimulation (DCS) technologies that can operate in hightemperature (>250 C), high pressure (>20,000 psi), hard rock, corrosiveenvironments. Improvements in deep well DCS technologies include, but arenotlimited to: (1) Innovative drilling concepts or systems to improvedrillingefficiency; (2) electronics, sensors and improved diagnostic capabilityduringdrilling operations; (3) non damaging fluids;https://e-center.doe.gov/iips/faopor.nsf/1be0f2271893ba198525644b006bc0be/3f755e59894fd8a285256f94006869b8?OpenDocumentDE-PS26-05NT42395-2 Area of Interest 2: TIGHT GAS COMPLETION ANDSTIMULATIONTECHNOLOGIESApplications may and may not be applicable in deep HTHP harsh environments;but, must be step changes to current technologies used or known to exist.Thissection would include research to advance the status of today?stechnologies inthe completion and stimulation area in tight gas formations;https://e-center.doe.gov/iips/faopor.nsf/1be0f2271893ba198525644b006bc0be/f8b31b2e0a18377e85256f9400696f81?OpenDocumentDE-PS26-05NT42395-3 Area of Interest 3: ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY DRILLINGSYSTEMSAdditionally the gas program is interested in the integration anddemonstrationof current and new drilling technology into systems for compatibility withenvironmentally sensitive or off-limits areas (e.g., Otero Basins of NewMexico, Wetlands of Louisiana, East Texas and Mississippi Coasts, and RockyMountain areas etc.) The concept is the integration of currently known butunproven or novel technology to develop drilling systems that will haveverylimited environmental impact and enable moderate to deep drilling andproduction operations and activity.https://e-center.doe.gov/iips/faopor.nsf/1be0f2271893ba198525644b006bc0be/3ffa1d0151a1c51085256f94006abc7d?OpenDocumentDE-PS26-05NT42395-4 Area of Interest 4: TECHNOLOGIES AND STRATEGIES TOENHANCECOALBED METHANE (CBM) PRODUCTIONAs part of this Announcement, the development and demonstration of advancedtechnologies and techniques are sought that will allow a more efficient useofcapital (lower drilling, completion, and production costs), enhance thedesorption and flow of methane [in/from coal seams], increase EURs, andlimitand/or reduce environmental impacts related to CBM drilling, completion, andstimulation. Technologies, techniques and strategies are sought that areprimarily applicable to low rank coals, coals with relatively lower gascontent, coals with low and/or isolated cleat permeability, and relativelydeeper and/or thinner coals. In general, the DOE seeks innovations thatwilllead to the commercial development of CBM in basins/plays that haveheretoforebeen sub-economic.Enhanced recovery of CBM from traditional plays via noveltechniques/methodsthat have widespread applicability are not excluded from this request. Thedemonstration of truly state-of-the-art/emerging technologies andtechniques innew or underdeveloped basins and plays will also be considered if there isareasonable probability that the technology/exploitation scheme will lead tocommercial operations by industry. The DOE is NOT seeking, nor will itfund, projects that are primarily operational in nature or simply an[other]application of commonly used or widely available technologies/techniques.TheDOE?s ultimate objective is to support technology development anddemonstrations that will directly lead to commercial CBM production [by theprivate sector] from underdeveloped/non-traditional plays and basins.Aspects described in Area of Interest 3 may also be applicable to Area ofInterest 4 (CBM).https://e-center.doe.gov/iips/faopor.nsf/1be0f2271893ba198525644b006bc0be/769221a60cee7c0585256fa200735f0f?OpenDocumentThere is no limitation on the number of different applications an Applicantmaysubmit. However, a separate application must be submitted for each ProgramArea of Interest for which the Applicant is interested in receiving anaward. Each application must be complete and shall not rely upon anotherapplicationfor submission of the required documents.Questions regarding how to submit an application through IIPS can bee-mailedto the IIPS HELP Desk at [email protected] or by calling 1-800-683-0751.Applicants are strongly cautioned to begin transmission of an applicationatleast 24 hours in advance to allow for sufficient time for uploading filesandto ensure adequate time to address problems or concerns with transmissionof anapplication, if any.
