FY 2003 National Criminal History Improvement Program: The BJS NCHIP program is an umbrella program that implements the grant provisions of the Crime Identification Technology Act of 1998, the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, the National Child Protection Act of 1993, those provisions of the Omnibus Crime Control Safe Streets Act of 1968, the Law Enforcement Act of 1994 and several others. NCHIP provides direct funding to States to improve the quality, timeliness, and immediate accessibility of criminal history and related records. The NCHIP FY 2003 appropriation is $40 million, with an additional $3 million appropriate for the purposes described in the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 and the Violence Against Women Act of 2000.
