Hawaiian Duck Monitoring Study: Provide fiscal year 2012 funds in the amount of twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000) to further the purpose of this Cooperative Agreement with Oregon State University (OSU) which will provide collaborative research and technical assistance for the recovery of the endangered Hawaiian duck. To do this, Oregon State University will assist refuge staff in designing and implementing a monitoring study to evaluate the effects of exclusionary fencing, of a portion of taro patches on Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge, on Hawaiian duck and other endangered waterbirds. This project will assist in evaluating the effects of a management practice of an economic use on trust resources and compatibility of this practice on a National Wildlife Refuge. This project directly supports the refuge's purpose to conserve and recover endangered Hawaiian waterbirds.
