Increasing Adolescent Immunization Coverage in School-Based Health Centers: NIP is soliciting investigator-initiated research that will help expand and advance our understanding of the feasibility and acceptability of providing adolescent vaccines in school-based health centers. Although more than 90% of adolescents report having a usual source of health care, only about one-third make regular preventive visits. The ideal setting to deliver preventive services to adolescents is in the medical home; however, schools are the only non-traditional site where a large proportion of the adolescent population can potentially be reached for the purpose of routine or emergency (e.g. influenza pandemic) vaccination. Although only about 6% of schools in the U.S. have school-based health centers (SBHCs), SBHCs are the most logical initial focus for efforts to increase the use of vaccines for adolescents in schools, and may serve as a setting to learn more about the feasibility of vaccinating adolescents in other school programs. The major goals are to assess immunization services offered in SBHCs, identify barriers to immunization in SBHCs, identify best methods to obtain consent and track vaccinations, and, in a sub-sample of these settings, develop, test, and use SBHCs to draw conclusions about the interventions to increase vaccination coverage among adolescents in SBHCs and other school-based settings. Applications must address the research objectives listed in this RFA. Applications that fail to address the research objectives will be considered non-responsive. Responsiveness review will be conducted by the Scientific Program Administrator (SPA), NIP.
