Laboratory and Theoretical Investigations of the Thermodynamic Properties of Polar Compounds in PM: Recent studies have suggested that polar organic compounds may comprise a large component of the organic fraction of ambient PM, especially under conditions of high photochemical activity. Thermodynamic properties of these compounds are required to predict the partitioning of these compounds between the gas phase and PM. At the present time, experimental values of critical thermodynamic parameters, such as vapor pressure and activity coefficients, are available for only a few polar compounds. The purpose of this cooperative agreement is to carry out laboratory and theoretical studies to improve the understanding of the key chemical processes controlling the ambient concentrations and composition sof the polar organic fraction of PM.
