Mexican Wolf Project Support: Monitoring, Assessment, and Conservation: This Cooperative Agreement is entered into between the Service and the San Carlos Apache Tribe, to foster cooperation between the Service and the Tribe in Mexican wolf monitoring and management (which includes removal of wolves as set forth in the Mexican wolf final rule (63 Fed. Reg. 1752, January 12, 1998)).A. The Service's Indian Policy and Secretarial Order 3206 provide that the Service will assist Tribes in developing and expanding tribal conservation and management programs, assist Tribes in identifying funding sources for fish and wildlife resource management, and pursue intergovernmental agreements to formalize arrangements involving sensitive species.B. The San Carlos Apache Tribe is a federally recognized tribe. Its treaty with the United States was established on July 1, 1852, and the San Carlos Apache Reservation was established through executive order in 1871.C. The Tribe and the Service have a common interest in promoting healthy ecosystems.D. In the Mexican wolf final rule, the Service did not propose or approve Mexican wolf recovery on tribal lands which includes the San Carlos Apache Reservation.
