Microhole Technology Development II: OBJECTIVE OF PROPOSED ACTIVITY: The DOE intends to develop the potential for a low cost exploration and production drilling demonstrated to date by national laboratory research. The objective of this work is to revitalize exploration drilling for shallow and unconventional (fractured) reservoir environments. Significant cost reductions are anticipated by changing the drilling paradigm to: drilling boreholes large enough for only developing the production capability needed for continued economic development of mature fields; and, utilizing the drill rig primarily for information purposes in unconventional, deep reservoir environments as opposed to primarily providing production capability. The anticipated 10 fold reduction in drilling cost is expected to provide an essential tool to production for economically developing depleted and unconventional reservoirs. In addition, the reduced drilling footprint is expected to provide an enabling exploration tool for environmentally sensitive areas. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The focus of this solicitation will be to further develop downhole tool capabilities specifically designed to enhance Coiled Tube Drilling capabilities, specifically in the areas of low weight on bit, low torque, and high penetration rate for wellbore diameters less than 3-1/2 inch diameter. The area of improved materials for coiled tubing, drill bit performance, and advanced, low cost drilling assemblies will also be a focus of this solicitation. High pressure jet drilling technologies will also be considered as long as hole degradation can be minimized for extended periods of circulation (shrouded jet). COST SHARE: A minimum of 20% industry cost share will be required.
