Notice of Intent to Issue Funding Opportunity Announcement entitled Crosscutting Research for Coal-Fueled Power Plants: The Department of Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) intends to issue a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) on behalf of the DOE Office of Fossil Energy. It is anticipated that the FOA will be available the first quarter of calendar year 2019. The objective of the planned FOA is to competitively solicit and award research and development (R and D) projects that will: (1) enhance the flexibility, reliability, efficiency, and resiliency of fossil power plants; (2) generate insight into key challenges facing the existing fleet of coal power plants, especially with respect to cyclic operation; and (3) reduce the water consumption of fossil power plants. Three topic areas are envisioned for the FOA: 1) advanced manufacturing of embedded sensors, 2) coal power plant cooling technologies (both wet cooling towers and dry cooling), and 3) modeling existing coal plant challenges. This FOA will be supported by the Crosscutting Research Program, which develops technology with applicability to a broad range of fossil energy applications. PLEASE NOTE THAT NO APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED THROUGH THIS NOTICE. Please do not submit questions or respond to this Notice of Intent. Prospective applicants to the FOA should begin formulating ideas and gathering data in anticipation of the issuance of this FOA.
