Program Area of Interest 2: SCR Catalyst Developments: Note: Please read the Master Funding Opportunity Announcement (attached below) for complete details on evaluation criteria and application preparation instructions. Proposals are to include either pilot-scale (slip stream) or field testing-scale evaluations of advanced SCR catalyst developments conducted in the flue gas generated from a pulverized coal-fired or cyclone-fired furnace. Testing can be conducted on one or more different ranks of coal. The expected duration of the projects should be 1 to 3 years. The objectives of this area are to advance SCR catalyst developments which will provide advantages in ease of retrofitting to boilers that have space constraints with regards to typical SCR installations, eliminate the balance of plant issues with the use of ammonia based reagents, and improve monitoring techniques to provide real time data on the boiler operation impacts on the deactivation of the SCR catalyst. Proposals pertaining to the first two objectives need to address balance of plant, regeneration, and longevity issues with the proposed catalysts and reagents. A reduction in the associated capital and operating costs needs to be demonstrated such that the levelized cost savings of at least 25% on a dollar-per-ton of NOx removed is realized over the current state-of-the-art SCR. This research is to be innovative when compared to technologies that are currently being implemented and demonstrated at the commercial-scale. Additionally, the offered projects need to have successfully completed laboratory/bench-scale or prior pilot-scale testing and these results are required to be presented in the proposal to clearly demonstrate the technology's capabilities and cost benefits. The proposed technologies need to address one of the following three categories: - Catalysts that operate at temperatures and process conditions typical to flue gas downstream of cold-side particulate collection devices. The performance of the catalysts is expected to meet or exceed 90% NOx reduction based on an inlet NOx concentration ranging from 0.10 to 0.40 lb/MMBtu. - Catalysts that utilize reducing agents other than ammonia or ammonia derivatives. The performance of the catalysts is expected to meet or exceed 90% NOx reduction based on an inlet NOx concentration ranging from 0.10 to 0.40 lb/MMBtu. - SCR deactivation probe and software to provide real time information on catalyst operation and deactivation predictions for catalyst management.
