Sub-Area of Interest 2A: Interconnect - Materials for SOFCCathode/Interconnect Interface: NOTE: Please read the Master Funding OpportunityAnnouncement (attached below)for complete details on evaluation criteria and application preparationinstructions.SUB-AREA OF INTEREST 2A: Interconnect ? Materials for SOFCCathode/Interconnect InterfaceApplications are requested to develop solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)cathode/interconnect interfacial materials that provide stable electricalcontact between the two components at typical SOFC operating temperatures(650 degrees C ? 800 degrees C). Maintaining or re-establishing contactfollowing temperaturetransients from ambient to operating temperature is essential. The cathode/interconnect interface requires an interfacial material toensuregood electrical contact is maintained. It is anticipated this interfacewillnot have the benefit of external compression.Cathode materials are typically ceramic perovskites (e.g., strontium dopedlanthanum manganite (LSM)) and interconnect materials are typically coatedoruncoated ferritic steels (e.g., alloy 446).Desired characteristics of the interface material:?Electrically conductive for 40,000 hours (conductivity not less than LSM).?Chemically stable with the cathode and interconnect materials.?Chemically stable at the SOFC operating temperature.?Ability to withstand stress developed through CTE mismatch during cooldown toambient conditions or the ability to self-heal at operating temperaturefollowing failure during cool down to ambient conditions. The approach should consider the cathode, interface material andinterconnectas a system.Novel concepts such as microwave-assisted sintering orcathode/interface/interconnect sintering in reduced environments will beconsidered.Cost, manufacturability and reliability are all critical factors in meetingtheSECA Program goals.
