BLM AZ Golden Eagle Inventory and Monitoring: Project Background Information: Golden eagle is conducted collaboratively by the Southwestern Golden Eagle Management Committee, formed in 2010, which involves a Federal, State and local governments, tribes and public utilities partnership effort to manage golden eagles in Arizona. This effort started in 2010. The Arizona Game and Fish Department coordinates management efforts and funding from a host of cooperators to carry out various activities statewide. Arizona BLM desires to assist the Southwest Golden Eagle Management Committee by partially funding the continuation of the golden eagle nest inventory and monitoring effort. Within the past 5 years, there have been public concerns about the potential impacts of renewable energy projects on golden eagle populations in the western United States. Golden eagles are protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act of 1940. Nesting golden eagles have only recently been documented in significant numbers in Arizona. The objective of this project is to further the understanding of golden eagle nesting success on public lands in Arizona in order to address public concerns and allow BLM to make informed decisions regarding renewable energy projects on public lands. Project Objective: This project will maintain a successful, yet budding, partnership between Federal, State and County government agencies, tribes, utility companies, and NGOs (American Eagle Foundation) in order to continue to improve public understanding of the conservation status of the golden eagle in Arizona.
